Rick Benson builds quality, speck and custom home that are also
energy efficient. when Rick Benson talks about his business, the
reoccurring theme is quality. He is committed to using only quality
materials and working with quality people. He feels it's important
to build strong relationships with his clients, subcontractors,
vendors and manufacturers.
Rick explains "I use the most qualified subcontractors
that are insured, licensed and professional. I know I can count on
them to do quality work."
Rick is a member and strong believer in the Home
Builders Association (HBA). "The HBA exists to serve the public by
requiring members to quality and meet certain standards. We work
closely with the city on regulations and codes. We are held to a
higher standard. I'm proud of that and proud to work with other HBA
members."
Rick believes customer service is the most important
aspect of his business, but it goes even deeper than that. "People
have a goal of building their dream home and staying there, but most
people actually move every 7 1/2 years. It is important to me to
build quality relationships with my clients, to build trust and
friendship. I'm very detail oriented. I follow through on little
things. I stay on budget and on time. I encourage people to put
value in their home. My job is to guide and lead them through each
step of the building process. I try to take a lot of the stress of
building a home off of my clients' shoulders and make it a positive
experience. I want them to be happy with the first home I build for
them, and I want to be the builder they call again when its time to
build their next home.
"My experience working with Rick was wonderful," says
Kathleen Chandler. "I have no complaints at all and would have no
problem building with Rick again. He was there when he said he would
be, he answered his phone or always called right back. He even put
my chandelier together for me when the directions were lost."
Kathleen and her husband Craig, moved into their new home in
February.

Rick says, "Craig and Kathleen didn't want a typical home. After
talking with them to find out exactly what they wanted, we selected
a floor plan, and then tailored it to meet their needs. I want each
home to have personality and reflect its owner's style. Kathleen and
Craig wanted an open, airy feeling. They also wanted storage space."
"We have a lot of storage, a safe room and I wanted the kids to have
an area that was all their own," says Kathleen. "Rick created
"hideouts" in each of their bedrooms. It's a small room and a little
door they can climb through. They play in there and I told
them it can be as messy as they want - we just shut the door. Of
course Cassie and Kirk told us the hideout was their favorite
feature of their bedrooms.
When
making selections, Rick tries to make it easy, informal and low
stress. "I work so closely with my clients that I really get a good
feel for what they want. I'll narrow the choices down to three or
four and show those. If the client wants to see more, I'll bring
three or four more. Too many choices can be overwhelming. It's my
responsibility as a builder to help guide them through the decision
making process. I don't pressure them to make decisions right away,
either. I give them some time to think it over. My advice is to go
with your first instinct. Most of the time we go back to their first
choice.
Many features that would be considered options in other
homes are standard in Rick's homes, such as all wood trim, crown
molding, custom header systems above the windows and doors, matching
cabinetry throughout, and many other custom features. "We use a lot
of tile and hardwoods throughout. It's livable, friendly and easy to
clean, especially for those with kids and pets. Most of our home
feature ceiling heights of ten to twelve feet. Granite is used for
nearly all countertop surfaces - even in the laundry room. We use
high efficiency windows with low E glass with UV protection so
drapes, furniture or areas with carpet don't fade. Our heating and
cooling systems are also high efficiency and we use cellulose
insulation. There is a fast pay back for the homeowner using high
efficiency features."

Rick is currently
the only builder in the area participating in ENERGY STAR, a
national, voluntary program sponsored and developed by the United
states Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that promotes efficient
productions, including homes. Homes that have earned
the ENERGY STAR meet the EPA's performance guidelines. Rick
explains, "An independent company in Kansas City inspects the home
three times before rating it as an ENERGY STAR home. It was
the logical thing to do, as we were already following most of the
practices for ENERGY STAR. We just added the inspections and the
documentation."
When Rick is not working, he enjoys spending time with
his wife Sam, his daughter Sara and son Tyler.
